Wrist rests: what they help with and what they do not
A wrist rest is one of the cheapest things on a desk and one of the most commonly used wrongly. The name is part of the problem: resting your wrist on it while typing is not what it is for, and doing so can make things worse rather than better.
It is a palm rest between bursts
The intended use is to support the heel of the hand during pauses, keeping the wrist straight rather than bent back. Planting the wrist on it and pivoting from there increases pressure on exactly the structures the rest is supposed to protect.
Height should match the keyboard
A rest that sits lower than the front edge of the keyboard forces the wrist up; one that sits much higher forces it down. Matching heights within a few millimetres is the whole trick, and it is why a rest that suits one board can be wrong for the next.
Memory foam compresses, gel does not
Memory foam moulds to the hand and gives a softer feel that many people prefer, but it flattens over months. Gel keeps its shape far longer and feels firmer from day one. Neither is better; they wear differently and it is worth knowing which you are buying.
