Mechanical keyboard switches are sold with colour names that mean different things depending on who made them, which makes comparison harder than it needs to be. Underneath the naming there are only three behaviours, and once you can feel the difference between them the colour becomes a detail.
Linear, tactile, clicky
A linear switch travels smoothly from top to bottom. A tactile switch has a bump partway down that tells your finger the keystroke registered. A clicky switch adds an audible click to that bump. Everything else – weight, travel distance, housing material – modifies one of those three, and none of it changes which category a switch belongs to.
Weight matters more than type for long sessions
A heavy switch is tiring over several hours regardless of whether it is linear or tactile. If your hands ache after a long evening, the actuation force is the number to look at before anything else. Lighter switches also produce more accidental keystrokes, which is the trade being made.
Sound is mostly the case, not the switch
A clicky switch in a well damped case can be quieter than a linear switch in a hollow one. If noise is the deciding factor, the board matters at least as much as the switch inside it, and hot-swap sockets let you change your mind later.
